We started training 18 days ago, averaging 6 miles daily. Hiking around Stanford afforded delightful trails – Lagunita; golf course to Alpine. We always drove past Alpine or Sandhill road all these years but didn’t realize what the shady nooks and crannies offered when hiking. It made us appreciate how lucky we are to have these pleasant and peaceful surroundings. Jane Stanford as a campus landscaper had clearly, eclectic notions of flora – the eucalyptus groves, for example, that later proved to be an invasive species and became a problem; a patch of Arizona desert with cacti and desert flora; and a garden with a Grieving Angel sculpture, ca. 1920s Europe. They appear incongruous with surrounding the steel and glass buildings of the medical sciences. Yet, they appear to be a welcome respite area for the overworked hospital staff.
